Most homes focus their electrical safety planning on circuit breakers that guard against overload and short circuits. But there’s a second, less understood device that protects something far more important: people. That device is the RCCB — Residual Current Circuit Breaker.
What an RCCB Actually Does
An RCCB constantly compares the current flowing into a circuit with the current flowing out. Under normal conditions, these should be equal. If even a small amount of current leaks — through a damaged wire, a faulty appliance, or a person accidentally touching a live part — the RCCB detects the imbalance and cuts the power within milliseconds, well before it becomes life-threatening.
Why It’s Different From a Regular Breaker (MCB)
- MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) protect the wiring and appliances from overload and short-circuit current.
- RCCBs protect people from electric shock caused by earth leakage — something an MCB alone cannot detect.
The two are complementary, not interchangeable. A fully protected home electrical panel typically uses both.
Where RCCBs Matter Most
- Bathrooms and kitchens, where water and electricity are more likely to meet
- Outdoor sockets and garden equipment
- Homes with older or unshielded wiring
- Households with children, where curiosity around sockets and appliances is higher risk
Choosing a Sensitivity Rating
RCCBs are commonly available in 30mA and 100mA sensitivity. For personal protection against electric shock, 30mA is the standard recommendation, as it’s sensitive enough to trip before a leakage current becomes dangerous to a person, while still tolerant of the normal minor leakage in a healthy electrical system.

An RCCB is a small addition to your distribution board that does one job extremely well: it can be the difference between a nuisance trip and a life-threatening accident. If your home doesn’t have one yet, it’s worth treating as essential — not optional.
